San Francisco to San Diego

Sean and I make our way down coast from San Francisco to San Diego. Averaging about 100 miles a day by traveling on road bikes with Camelbaks, and moteling it at night. One set of biking clothes required that we wash nightly. Absolutely no mechanical issues at all (knock on wood)!

Day 1 was a day of rollers with a decent tailwind from San Francisco to Marina just North of Monterey.

Day 2 started in Marina and down the coast through Big Sur. Serious climbing and descending with spectacular views as our reward at the tops. We did nearly 8000' of climbing that day and ended in San Simeon.

Day 3 began with breakfast and southward from San Simeon through San Luis Obispo to a town called Lompoc.

Day 4 began with a climb out of Lompoc towards the coast and south through Santa Barbera on to Oxnard. Santa Barbera was beautiful

Day 5 was a long one. We began in Oxnard and headed south through Malibu and then made our way through Los Angeles. We detoured 20 miles to visit a bike shop in Santa Monica. Sean insisted on getting a new set of Castellis! What can I say other than it was Los Angeles... We finished a 130 mile day at Dana Point. We also realized that our voyage was coming to an end soon.

Day 6 was routed as 111 miles, but I goofed! Apparently I routed a loop around Camp Pendelton. So our actual mileage was only around 70 miles. We made it to San Diego by 2! We met family at the beach and bid farewell to our voyage. Too fast, too short, and wishing that we had more to go.

Next year we will make a trip from the the Canadian border to San Francisco so we can lay claim to the entire West Coast.

Thanks for checking out San Francisco Velo!
